Massage candles are a fantastic invention. We all know how romantic and sensual candlelight is, add to that an evocative fragrance and a massage and you have a recipe for fun times. So, the Shunga Erotic Art Massage Candle sent to me by Latex Leather and Lace for review was something to look forward to after the stresses of Christmas.
I’ve reviewed a few massage candles, so I knew pretty much what to expect from the Shunga Massage Candle. My playmate however was new to this and was somewhere between excited and terrified. Which mildly amused me because I’m a bit sick.
Using Massage Candles
So, for anyone who has never heard of a massage candle it’s very easy to use. It’s simply a solid form of massage oil. You burn the candle for a little while, enough to create a pool of fluid and then pour the liquid onto your partner or hand to massage with. The fluid shouldn’t be hot but pleasantly warm.
This isn’t the same as wax play at all so don’t panic. However, it must be said I have reviewed massage candles where the oil has been hot not warm at the point of pouring. So, it’s always best to check the temperature of the oil before liberally pouring it all over your partner in case they aren’t into that.
My Shunga Erotic Art Massage Candle is called Desire and is Vanilla Fetish in scent. Even before I light it I can smell the sweet, warm heady vanilla in the candle. It’s not sickly smelling which worried me as sometimes vanilla can be overpowering. Both of us liked the fragrance and he even commented that he expected it to smell girly, but it didn’t.
The tin containing the Shunga Massage Candle is around 2.5 inches in diameter and an inch in height. On the lid is a Japanese style image of what appears to be lovers preparing for a massage. It’s pretty and wouldn’t look out of place on a bedside cabinet or dressing table.
Heady, Sensual Scent
I lit the Shunga Massage candle around 20 minutes before I wanted to use it as instructed on the back of the tin. You can’t expect the oil to be instant as it needs to melt first so there needs to be a little preparation put into it. The candle lights easily and with no problems at all first attempt. Straight away the powerful smell of vanilla starts to fill the room.
The scent is heady and adds something sexy to the atmosphere of my bedroom. Add that to the flattering, flickering sensual candlelight and I strongly hope we will remember what we’re there for. Twenty minutes passes quickly but when I check the candle I feel like the pool of fluid isn’t very big. So, I decided to leave it another ten. After the full half an hour had elapsed the candle had burnt down so I could see the base of the tin through the now clear liquid.
Blowing out the candle and waiting for the wick to stop smoking I prepared to dispense the oil. Always blow your massage candle out before pouring the oil. It’s easy enough to relight it afterwards but you could burn yourself otherwise.
The liquid flows from the candle into my hand with no problem at all. I also pour a little directly on to his back and his low moan as the warm oil hits him is very rewarding. The oil feels warm but not at all hot and cools very quickly once out of the candle tin, so you do need to apply it quite fast.
Topping Up the Oil
The Shunga Massage candle produces a thick feeling clear oil. It’s quite viscous but feel much thicker than say baby oil. It spreads across his skin nice and smoothly allowing my fingers to glide across his back effortlessly,
One thing I notice straight away is I could do with more oil. Although what I have is great it doesn’t spread very far so, I immediately relight the candle to top it up. The oil smells amazing and it doesn’t leave my hands feeling icky.
The one complaint I have about the Shunga Massage Candle massage oil is it really doesn’t last very long. It absorbs into the skin quickly and leaves you lacking the glide you have when its freshly poured. Because you must wait for the candle to generate the oil again this can be a bit of a problem. I topped up the oil three times in totally during our massage.
One of the nice things about this quality is you aren’t left feeling like you need to bounce straight into the shower after use. It sinks into your skin leaving little residue and your skin feels amazing afterwards. Very soft, as if you’ve applied a body butter.
The Shunga Massage Candle is made from soybean and nut oils which is important to mention for allergen reasons. Obviously if you suffer an allergy or intolerance to either this candle won’t be suitable for you.
The little tin says the Shunga Massage Candle will burn for 7 hours and we burnt it for around an hour and there is still plenty of wax in the tin.
We really enjoyed using the Shunga Erotic Art Massage Candle. It created a sexy, sensual ambience and using the oil was very erotic. I just wish there had been a bit more longevity to it.
Thank you so much to the awesome people at Latex Leather and Lace for sending me the Shunga Massage Candle for review. I was sent this item free of charge and in exchange for an honest and impartial review.
